A project called Framsticks (at http://www.frams.alife.pl/) is a "three-dimensional life simulation project". It is a fairly robust program with good visual representation of what's going on, and it uses evolutionary algorithms to optimize it's artificial life creatures. It also comes with a demo mode so you can see the program in action without having to figure it out.

A fun project to play with for anyone interested in genetic algorithms, artificial life, or artificial intelligence in general.
