Meta Genetic Programming

A rather intriguing but mostly unexplored use of genetic programming is to evolve programs that themselves evolve programs. While this approach can be somewhat more complicated than single level genetic programming, the potential is great. In theory, a population of genetic programming programs could be used to evolve themselves into programs that were ever more efficient at evolving other programs. There is a site titled Evolving Evolutionary Algorithms that discusses some research into this area. This site references some papers that have been written on the subject as well as describes the problem in more detail. There is also a page that contains the contents of the second paper ever written on genetic programming, and this paper contains a section on meta genetic programming. Seems like a promising angle towards ever self-improving AI, if it could be done properly. |
