H&R Block Error Invites Identity Theft

In the latest example of corporate bunglehood, H&R Block sent out thousands of marketing packages to former customers with their SSN printed on the outside of the package. While the SSN is embedded in a longer string of numbers, enterprising identity thieves could probably extract the number.

Also, since these packages were all sent to customers from up to several years before, many have gone out to old addresses and likely ended up in the hands of unknown strangers.

H&R Block, upon discovering this error, sent letters to the intended recipients. However, many people received the letters but no packages, leaving them to wonder where their SSN had been sent.

Is it just me or are these kinds of large scale identity compromising mistakes becoming more common? Maybe we're just paying more attention to them now that the identity theft problem is so rampant.
