Identity Theft Hotline in Illinois

I found this little blurb in Chicago Tribune about an identity theft hotline in Illinois: Illinois has formed a new hot line for residents to report identity theft and take steps to repair their credit and prevent future problems, Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan said Tuesday. The hot line is designed to provide immediate counseling to victims, she said. Madigan said the Federal Trade Commission received 11,137 identity theft complaints from Illinois residents in 2005. Madigan's office received 325 complaints last year concerning identity theft, she said. Illinois residents can reach the identity theft hot line by calling 866-999-5630. For the hearing-impaired, the TTY number is 877-844-5461. This is a good move, something I hadn't thought of. One of the biggest problems with identity theft is that victims feel overwhelmed and often don't report or don't do anything about an identity theft. This makes it easy for people to report as well as to find out what to do to fix the situation. |
