Some recent identity theft research shows that the sources and targets of identity theft may not be exactly what you expect. The first myth dispelled is that senior citizens are the most common target of identity theft. In fact this is not the case. It turns out that those aged 25-34 are at the highest risk of identity theft. There is also some interesting information regarding the sources of identity theft. From the article: 30% - From stolen wallets, checkbooks and credit cards. 15% - From acquaintances, relatives or in-home employees. 8% - Online access. 8% - Stolen paper mail or fraudulent change of address. 1% - Obtaining information from garbage. It turns out that the internet simply isn't a huge source of identity theft. What does this mean? Zip your purse and keep your wallet inaccessible. |
