New Identity Theft Laws for Illinois

January 1st, 2006, will bring into effect new identity theft laws in Illinois. These laws will require companies to disclose to customers if their data is compromised. I believe this is a good law. Some say it can cause undue panic in those affected, and others say too many breach warnings could desensitize us so that we begin ignoring the warnings. I say it keeps these companies honest and forces them to take their information security seriously. I hope this type of law becomes common. Of course, only time will tell if it is effective. The new laws also provide means for residents to freeze their credit report so that no identity thieves can apply for loans or credit in their name. In this setup, the reporting agencies are required to contact the person supposedly requesting credit to verify it is actually them. This may be a little inconvenient, but it is an opt-in program, and it will be very useful for those whose identities have been breached. I'm glad to see more laws springing up. I'm not in favor of laws for their own sake, but this indicates the beginning of our society taking this threat seriously and trying to find ways to fight it. Definitely looking in the right direction now. |
