This identity theft press release poses a list of simple questions that you can use to do a quick sanity check on how vulnerable you are to identity theft. The press release asks these questions: Do you carry your social security card with you? Is your pin # on the back of your ATM card to help you remember? Do you throw away those pre-approved credit cards that come in the mail? Do you have a copy of your latest credit report? Is your driver's license number your social security number? Is your major medical insurance ID the same as your social security number? Do you have a 'virtual credit card? More than 40 million credit card numbers were compromised after a computer hacker broke into a card processing center. (June ’05) Were you one of them? Do you get calls about merchandise or services you didn't purchase? A lot of these tips are ones we've seen before. Also, we now know that security breaches where huge numbers of records are compromised (like 40 million) pose a much smaller risk to the individuals than do breaches where a small number of records are compromised. Other than that, a decent list to scan through. Check out the press release too, because it references some other potential sources of good info, too. |
