This list of ID theft tips may help you out during your virtually inevitable visits to the mall this holiday season.

The article says that we're more at risk during the holidays because of all the activity in consumer oriented places like the mall. This is due to the fact that we're all a little less likely to pay attention to the details that are going on around us. This further increases identity thieves ability (and, thus, desire) to scam us. Here is the list of tips, in case it is taken down:

* Don’t carry extra credit cards, a passport or Social Security card in your purse or wallet.

* Avoid falling prey to “shoulder surfers” when using your credit or ATM card.

* Cover your hand when entering PINs or showing personal information.

* Never leave your credit card or ATM receipts behind or throw them in public trash receptacles.

* Only shop online with reputable retailers with a secure network.

* Don’t rely on banks or credit card companies to alert you to suspicious activity. Carefully monitor bank and credit card statements for fraudulent activity.

* Tear or shred all personal information, such as credit card numbers, bank statements, charge receipts and credit card applications.

The article also outlines a scam that is appearing recently. This scam takes place "when retail clerks pretend they encountered a problem after running a customer's credit card. The clerk picks up the phone to report the problem to 'the company,' giving the credit card number over the phone, then hanging up to say the problem has been fixed. In reality, the clerk is giving the credit card number to an accomplice."

Watch out for this, and follow these tips. Most importantly, use common sense.
